Road to the future
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump heats your home in an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly way by extracting heat from the outside air and converting it into comfortable indoor warmth. It is a smart alternative to a traditional boiler and works optimally in combination with underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators. If you combine your heat pump with good insulation, for example after façade or roof works, you maximize the efficiency of your installation. With a heat pump, you need less gas, or you can go completely gas-free. That’s good for the climate and also means you’ll save money on your energy bill, while taking a big step towards the sustainable, future-proof home of tomorrow.
For permit applications for new builds and rebuilds, a natural gas connection has been prohibited in Flanders since January 1, 2025. From July 1, 2025, when replacing a gas boiler, you will pay 21% VAT instead of 6%, while VAT on heat pumps will remain at 6% for both new builds and renovations.

How does a heat pump work?
A heat pump extracts heat from the environment (such as air or water) and raises it to a higher temperature level so you can heat your home with it. It uses a little electricity, but what you get in return is impressive: with 1 kilowatt-hour of electricity, a heat pump produces an average of 3 to 5 kilowatt-hours of heat. By comparison, with electric heating it’s simply 1 to 1. A heat pump is therefore a smart, energy-efficient and sustainable way to heat, and sometimes even cool. At Cleys, we offer 2 types of heat pumps.
Cooling and heating.
Air-to-air heat pump
With an air-to-air heat pump, the system actually works like a reversed refrigerator. The outdoor unit extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it indoors through indoor units. This type of heat pump is often used as an air conditioner with heating function.
- You need multiple indoor units in the rooms you want to heat or cool
- Works best for individual rooms or floors
- Relatively quick to install
- Interesting as a supplement to existing heating or in renovations without underfloor heating
The advantage here is that you can also cool in summer. Convenient for bedrooms or living spaces that heat up quickly.
full-fledged replacement
Air-to-water heat pump
The air-to-water heat pump also extracts heat from the outside air, but transfers it via a buffer tank or boiler to your central heating system (underfloor heating or radiators).
- Only one central unit in your home
- Heats your entire house and domestic hot water
- Ideal for new-build homes or major renovations with underfloor heating
- Higher efficiency and more comfort
- Higher investment, but also greater savings in the long term
This version is a full-fledged replacement for your traditional heating system and is also eligible for subsidies from the Flemish Government.
